Create a tessellation
A tessellation is the tiling of a plane using one or more geometric shapes, called tiles, with no overlaps and no gaps. MC Escher was a Dutch graphic artist who made mathematically-inspired woodcuts, lithographs, and mezzotints. Not only is his artwork famous for optical illusions, but he also utilizes tessellations in his work. Largely inspired by Moorish tilework.
Watch the video below to see the steps on how to make a tile for your tessellation.
**Be very careful to line your cut pieces up before you tape them together, if they are not lined up properly the tiles will not fit into each other. An easy way to do this is to make sure your cut area starts in a corner, so you know it will be taped starting at the opposite corner (see photo).
What you'll need:
Small square paper, larger piece of paper, scissors, tape, colored pencils or markers.
Create a tessellation by creating a repeating tile pattern. What do you see? Decorate by turning your tiles from shapes into animals, flowers, or monster shapes!
